2009 unsOund pro

The 2009 Unsound Pro finished up on Sunday afternoon in an
increasing SE swell provided by an approaching cold front. The surf
on the final day of competition slowly grew throughout the day,
culminating in waist to shoulder high waves at Lincoln Blvd., in Long Beach, NY.
While the surf did not quite match the quality of the past few years,
it was big enough to provide the local community with some exciting
surfing action.
The Mens Pro Final was dominated by last year’s champion Jeremy
Johnston. The Floridian’s front-side attack proved to be too much
for Jersey standouts Brendan Buckley and Sam Hammer, finishing 2nd
and 3rd respectively. Virginia Beach’s Phillip Goold had one great
wave but struggled to find another good wave for the backup score he
so badly needed.
The Unsound Pro jr. title was taken by Virginia Beach standout
Mike Dunphy. He surfed a great heat, taking down Zach Humpfries,
Brendan Buckley and local standout Balaram Stack. Dunphy took the heat
pretty easily and left the other contestants in a tight race for 2nd,
3rd and 4th.
Other notable results: Mikey DeTemple won the Longboard Pro, Alexis Engstrom
took home the Womens Pro title and John Ratzenberger won the first ever
Unsound Grom 12 and under title.
